On 4 June 2018, I started self-hosting my blog using Google Cloud Platform’s Compute Engine. On 23 June 2024, I have just shut down and deleted that Compute Engine instance. The end of an era!
The blog is now hosted on wordpress.com.
When I decided to self-host back in 2018, I thought I would spend more time learning about infrastructure through the various tasks needed to maintain a blog (e.g., configuring nginx, rotating logs, etc). Turns out I’m not interested in infra enough to spend my scarce free time on that. I rather spend that time on learning or doing other stuff. Thus, self-hosting isn’t a good fit for me.
